I am always glad to read a Follett epic, this one especially so since I lived through most of it and the events are familiar. To tell the story, he has taken the characters, their relatives, acquaintances and ancestors and woven it into the fabric of world changing and everyday events. I have a better understanding of the period when all the events are tied together. It is unfortunate that his political leanings sometimes take precedence over unbiased writing. At times his writing slipped into the area of descriptive porn which was unnecessary.

Lie Down With Lions by Ken Follett
This a love triangle with a background of the Afghan war, further complicated wit the men on opposing sides. It is well written with exceptional work on the lives of women in an Afghan village where our main character uses her wiles to survive. I did get tired with the continual emphasis on breast feeding. This was the least of my problems, when half-way thru the book I thought it had changed to a porn novel. I found this section an unnecessary addition to the book. The story seemed to have lost its purpose. After that wasted section the book was back on track with a great ending.

"On Wings of Eagles" by Ken Follett
Of course I remember this incident from the NEWS of the time but reading an account of it gives it a different perspective. If you are expecting something like a Rambo rescue, you will be disappointed. The main theme of the book is the negotiations involved to get the men out of prison which was a hard road to travel. When that was finally accomplished by other means, the problem was to get them out of the country.
The book is an adventure story, written by a great storyteller, problems arise and are solved. All are heroes (after all, they are Americans), strength overcomes all weaknesses and we even have a happy ending. There are things you have to take with a grain of salt but you still have to admire Ross Perot.

Winter of the World (The Century Trilogy #2) - Ken Follett
I love history and reading these books by Follett is like reading a history book but better. The characters are woven into the actual events bypassing the cold hard facts of history and making them come alive. Through the eyes of the characters we see the events as if they are happening now. Well written and hard to put down.
