World War II

WW2 was a war between Germany and Russia who eventually won it. Europe was in the war because Germany needed their resources. The rest were in the war because they couldn't mind their own business. Young men went to war because they wanted the excitement of visiting Paris and going to the Follies Bergere and the Moulin Rouge. Now you don't need to read a book about the reasons for the start of the Second World War.

Light Bulbs in Japan

From "The Economist" magazine I learned that Japan has both 50 & 60 Cycle generators. This came about because at the time of installation, some of the parts were bought in the U.S and the rest in Germany. It is also the only place that has 100 volt power, not 110 or 220. Japan has ten electric companies and they don't cooperate which makes it hard for any moderation to be done.

"Where Eagles Dare" by Alistair MacLean

"Where Eagles Dare," a book and a movie about British commandos on a WW 2 raid into Germany. I saw the movie more than once and decided to see if the book was anywhere close. I was not disappointed. The book and movie ran along the same lines, although I found the book much more exciting. The start was slow but then it was non-stop action, intrigue and twists to the plot. What I did not like was the continuous flippant remarks by the second in command. Too much for a mission fraught with danger. For those interested in WW 2 commandos, I highly recommend this book.

I used to wear an engagement ring.

In Germany, engaged men and women wear a ring on their left hand. When they get married, they switch the ring to the right hand.

Pork Hocks on the Spit.

This is a photo of pork hocks on the spit in a restaurant window in Munich, Germany. I didn't have any in that place but I did try them out when I was in Fussen. That is a lot of food. It's like eating your own pork roast.
With the influx of Muslims, I can't imagine what they think when they see this. The only thing I ever saw them eat in a restaurant was ice cream. I should say the men. The women just sat at the table, behind their veils and watched.

When I saw the news about the bridge collapse in Italy,

the first thing that came to my mind was cruise ships. That sounds odd and I’ll explain. Most ships are built in Germany and Italy. They are built in sections and welded together. As you walk down the passageway you can see where the sections come together. If the passageway is level and smooth, it was built in Germany. If you come along the passageway and you have to take a step up where they meet, then that ship was built in Italy. The collapse of the bridge does not surprise me.

Leftovers

Not all meals are of the A1 type. As everyone knows, somewhere along the line there are leftovers. Such was the case yesterday, at least for me. In this case it was fish, leftover from the day before. Basa, from the Mekong, a type of catfish. Small world, eh? I asked my wife if she wanted any, as there was enough for two. She said no. A few minutes later she said, "I don't think I'm a fish person, I think I'm a steak person."
She hasn't always been a steak person. I remember when we got married in Germany, we would go out and have anything from deer to frog legs. When I got transferred back to Canada, she was into club sandwiches, something you couldn't get overseas. Somewhere along the line, that morphed into steak. I asked her once why she always preferred steak. She said, " It seems such a waste to go to a restaurant and not have steak."

It Is What It Is

Rained all evening and all night. Boom, boom in the sky, etc. I won't have to put the hose on today. Going up to 25C/77F. Humidity will be higher. It's already sticky.

Took my wife to the bank yesterday. She has a pension from Germany so every year the bank has to tell them she is still alive. So, I was sitting in my van, reading on my Kindle, when I hear this loud scream beside me. I looked out and this woman says to me, "Oh, I'm sorry, wrong car." Wonder what gave me away.

Looks like Halifax has come into the big time. We now have the second-highest homicide rate in Canada. In Canada the rate is at its lowest in four decades. I was going for a walk, maybe I better stay home.

Something to laugh at. The Atlantic Superstore is selling Replicas of the schooner Bluenose made in China. First off, the spelled Lunenburg wrong, added a h to it. There is also no wheel, plus a number of other bo bos. Lunenburg is the town where it was built. They make a lot of movies and tv shows there. "Haven" is filmed there.
