One thing I learned from watching crime shows is that if you commit a crime, make sure you go to your job the next day. Police love tohear, "He didn't show up for work today."

To Do List
So, it's spring and I have to make up my to do list. Not my wife's list, but my own. things I have to do, around the yard, house and shed. First I write them all down and number them.
#1 is, Make a list.
#2 is, Check list
#3 is, Revise list if I have to.
That depends on #2. Next is my wife's list which is #4. That can change daily.
After this list is finished, I use a black marker and strike out #1 because I've made my list.
Then I check to make sure I have all the items. If I have everything, I can strike out #2.
If I need to add to my list, I go to #3, make the addition and then strike out #'s 2 and 3.
You can never strike out #4. No explanation needed here.
After that I feel great because I already have 3 items off my list and I never even left my chair.

New To Baking
A lot of people taking up baking for the first time. For most of them, the novelty will soon wear off, when it becomes work instead of fun.

Snowstorm
The thing about a snow storm, it releases you from all expectations for the day, except to shovel snow when it is finished.

Outside Again
After getting the tree cut down and branches from the other trees lopped off, the backyard was full of potential firewood. That all had to be cut up, carted away, etc. But this was Oct. and starting to get cold, so it would have to wait until the spring. We shoved it all at the back of the yard and left it to stare at all winter. It did make big snow banks.
I spent part of last week cutting it up and carting it away. There was also bundles of small branches for garbage pickup. Garbage day is usually Mon. but since Mon was a holiday, our day was Sat. We are only allowed to throw out five bundles at a time, so three of my neighbors got to enjoy four or five bundles each. So now it is gone, and that's that.
I'm glad it was on Sat. because Sunday was heavy rain, and we would have had to carry it all out in that.

Outside Work.
I was busy outside last week. Last fall, I had one maple tree cut down and three others trimmed. They are large trees, about 70' high. The one I had cut down started to rot about 5' up. A branch was cut off years ago and it started there. Bugs got in and over the years it just got worse. I became worried that in some hurricane it would fall on the house next door. Not that I'm worried about it - that house is abandoned and ready for the wreckers. The property has a new owner, and people have been around in the last couple of days. That will bring along a new set of worries. What kind of neighbor will I get? In the photo you can see the tree coming down and the house next door.

Too Much Homework ?

Homework is an accepted part of children’s coursework, starting as early as first grade. But how much is too much?
Homework -- the traditional bane of a school-age child's existence -- is once again coming under fire. Some influential researchers say homework does little to improve a student's academic abilities. Others believe homework is excessive, and doing more harm than good.
The National PTA suggests children in kindergarten through second grade receive 10-20 minutes of homework each night. In grades three through six, that recommended amount increases to 30-60 minutes nightly. In middle and high school, the amount depends on the number and level of difficulty of classes a student takes.
At the turn of the century, homework was actually outlawed in some areas because it was considered child labor. The theory was to simply let kids be kids. But Sputnik and the space race changed everything. Almost overnight, educators were scrambling to fill the "education gap" with the Soviet Union.
Nine-year-old Andrew has so much homework that his stepmother, a teacher herself, says, “at times it is overwhelming.” Every day, including weekends, the fourth grader has at least 1½ hours of work to do. Some days it takes him two hours or more to finish up. Not surprisingly, this workload has dampened his enthusiasm for school.
A retired school teacher is spreading a message most students would agree with – kids in Alberta have too much homework.
“There’s huge amount of stress on families. And I see homework as the icing on the family stress cake,” said Vera Goodman, a Calgary-based author with more than 30 years of teaching behind her.

Some teachers sometimes overdo the work load. All factors need to be considered and sometimes teachers forget to do that.
And for every parent who thinks there's too much homework, however, there is another who feels her child needs more.
